Late summer – perfect for a trip to Ibiza

One of Ibiza’s beautiful coves (on the west coast)
Forget the tabloid image of all-night clubbing, loud music and young visitors in various states of inebriation and undress.
The real Ibiza is a beautiful place, blessed by a wonderful climate with many hours of sunshine each month.
Numerous fine white beaches and little coves tempt the swimmer and sun-worshipper, while walking/biking trails meander through wild flowers underneath a canopy of fragrant pine woods.
A few Ibizan facts:
- Ibiza is one of the Balearic Islands, in the Mediterranean east of the Spanish mainland.
- It’s a naturally beautiful island with white sand beaches, turquoise seas and verdant pine woods, olive groves and wild flowers.
- The island has a long history of invasion by various forces including the Ancient Romans, the Vandas, Byzantines, the Moors, the Norwegians and were finally claimed by Spain. Nowadays, the ‘invaders’ are tourists.
- Ibiza is 572.56 square kilometres (221.07 sq miles) land area. The highest point of the island is Sa Talaiassa, at 475 metres (1,558 ft).
- The population is estimated at approximately 132,500.
- Eivissenc, a dialect of Catalan, is spoken on Ibiza, as is Spanish. English is widely spoken in tourist areas.
- Though renowned for its clubbing scene, there are beautiful beaches, pine woods and walking/biking routes across the island.
Late summer, when most of the tourists have gone and the sun is kind rather than fierce, is a perfect time to explore this gem. Take the best map on your adventures – more info here.

Almost 2018

View from the clifftop walk, Brisbane River’s south bank
There are a few great walks alongside the Brisbane River. This morning we took a ‘down the cliff-face’ old path, then walked along the south bank.
There were a few others about, yet in a few hours’ time, this area will be packed with tens of thousands of New Year revellers watching the fireworks launched from huge barges in the centre of the river.

Blue-faced Honeyeaters feeding from trees lining the route
For now, it was an enjoyable walk, wildlife adorning the route here and there.

So, almost 2018. Wishing all a happy, healthy 2018.

Corfu – an island in need of a good map

Old Perithia
Discovery Walking Guides cartographic survey team has just returned from Corfu, and boy, does Corfu need a good map.
It’s a tricky island for visitors wanting to travel around by hire car or bike, because road signage is confusing (or non-existent) and unusually, roads have not been allocated road numbers.

Lefkimis Bay, Corfu
A few stretches of tarmac do have kilometre markers though this information is patchy to say the least. We also discovered that car systems such as TomTom and similar don’t work here.

Palaiokastritsa Bay, Corfu
So, it tuned out to be an interesting and most productive visit. The new Corfu Tour & Trail Super-Durable Map design work will shortly be under way, with a scheduled publication date around December 2016.

The Kaiser’s Throne, Corfu
With a good, reliable and newly researched map, visitors can confidently go beyond the usual tourist spots and discover the heart of this beautiful island.
Some ‘main roads’ through Corfu’s mountain villages are a bit of a squeeze!
